The story goes that the World Custard Pie Championships were inspired by that great pie thrower of the past, Charlie Chaplin, and organised by Councillor Mike FitzGerald to raise funds to build a village hall. First held in 1967 it did fade away for a while but was rescued from obscurity by the former Mayor of Coxheath ( Maidstone, Kent ) in 2004.

The event is organised in knockout rounds with points not only being awarded for hits on opponents but also for flair and creativity. Like so many of these events the competitors are also in fancy dress.

One of the organisers, Les Mitchell, refused to divulge the secret recipe used to create the pies but did confirm that they were made up of basically flour and water rather than real custard.
