100 years since the Titanic was launched
on May 31st, 2011 at 5:23 pmIt was 100 years ago today the ill fated Titanic was launched from the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. At the time she was the largest passenger ship in the world and was commissioned by the White Star Line.
I could go into more details here, but there are many websites out there that give you the facts so I thought I would concentrate on a lighter side and report on some of the conspiracies that surround this famous ship.
The main one is that it was not actually the Titanic that sunk on the bleak night of April 15th 1912 but, rather, her sister ship the ‘Olympic’ which briefly held the title as the largest ship when launched on 20th October 1910.
On 20th September 1911 the Olympic was involved in a collision with the British Warship HMS Hawke just off the Isle of Wight. Despite two of compartments being flooded and having a twisted propeller shaft she was able to return to Southampton safely.
The Olympic was repaired with some of the parts coming from the, then, under construction Titanic.
The White Star Line was blamed for the collision, hence they could not claim any insurance and were left with an unseaworthy vessel. The conspiracy claims that the Olympic was patched up, then made to look like the Titanic so no more time would be wasted without one of the ships in the water.

Other theories about the sinking include :
It was actually pack ice rather than an iceberg.
Some coal in one of the bunkers had started to smoulder, to neutralise the danger more coal was burnt. This lead to the higher speed than would have been usual through an area with icebergs.
A cursed Mummy was the cause of the sinking.
